Business Continuity Fundamentals

The vocabulary, the lifecycle and the reflexes that structure the whole discipline

A demanding entry course, designed so that by the end you can hold a professional conversation: tell an incident from a crisis, understand what an RTO actually commits you to, grasp why ISO 22301 separates the BIA from risk assessment, and spot in ten minutes whether an existing continuity programme stands up.

Learning objectives

  • Use the normative vocabulary without approximation
  • Place each deliverable within the continuity lifecycle
  • Explain the difference between BIA and risk assessment
  • Spot the signals of a continuity programme that only looks real
  • Position ISO 22301, the BCI GPG and sectoral regulation

Intended audience

  • Newcomers to the role
  • Local continuity coordinators
  • Auditors new to the domain
  • Executives wanting to challenge their arrangements

Prerequisites

  • None

Detailed curriculum

Module 1

What continuity is, and what it is not

Establish the vocabulary and dismantle the three misunderstandings that sink half of all programmes.

Module 2

The numbers that commit you

MTPD, RTO, RPO, MBCO: understanding what each acronym actually commits you to, and why they are not set in the same place.

Module 3

The standards landscape

Position ISO 22301, the BCI GPG, DORA and NIS 2 relative to each other, and know which to open for a given question.
